Fermentation Scientist

Xias Bio are looking for a Fermentation Scientist to join our growing team, supporting research and development and day-to-day operations of Xias Bio’s proprietary processes. The role requires a sound knowledge of fermentation processes (batch, fed-batch, continuous), high competency in aseptic technique, handling and management of genetically modified bacteria and yeast (Hazard group 1 microorganism), and recombinant protein expression and purification. The Fermentation Scientist will be responsible for the coordination of fermentation runs and all the work related to running fermentations, and purification of expressed recombinant proteins. Excellent communication skills are required to contribute to the communication of plans and results. The nature of the work will mean that from time to time this may include working with flexible hours and carrying out tasks other than those outlined below. Essential skills and experience:

• BSc in Biological sciences, bioprocess engineering or similar and MSc in a Fermentation related activity OR 3-5 years relevant technical work experience in a microbiological laboratory environment
• First-hand experience running lab-scale fermenters (0.5-5L)
• An excellent understanding of microbiology and the fermentation process
• Experience with recombinant protein expression and purification
• Experience with SDS PAGE analysis
• Excellent communicator: report writing, presentations and verbal communication skills are a necessity
• Ability to follow SOP’s and continuously improve lab operations with good organisational skills

Desirable skills and experience

• Experience working on multiple projects at once
• Experience in preparing master/working cell banks or seed trains
• Experience with cross-flow filtration
• Experience of running large-scale fermenters (25-300+)
• Experience in troubleshooting and problem-solving
• Writing SOPs and implementing quality control measures
• Working with good laboratory practice

Reports to: Senior Scientist

Remuneration: Commensurate to experience
